9th International Digital Curation Conference
“Commodity, catalyst or change-agent? Data-driven transformations in research, education, business & society ”

The 9th International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) will be held from Monday 24 February to Thursday 27 February 2014 at the Omni San Francisco Hotel (at Montgomery).

The Omni hotel is in the heart of downtown San Francisco. It is located right on the cable car line and is only a short walk to Union Square, the San Francisco neighborhood that has become a mecca for high-end shopping and art galleries.

This year the IDCC will focus on how data-driven developments are changing the world around us, recognising that the growing volume and complexity of data provides institutions, researchers, businesses and communities with a range of exciting opportunities and challenges. The Conference will explore the expanding portfolio of tools and data services, as well as the diverse skills that are essential to explore, manage, use and benefit from valuable data assets. The programme will reflect cultural, technical and economic perspectives and will illustrate the progress made in this arena in recent months

There will be a programme of workshops on Monday 24 and Thursday 27 February. The main conference programme will run from Tuesday 25 – Wednesday 26 February.

IDCC14 will be organised by the Digital Curation Centre UK in partnership with the University of California Curation Center (UC3) at the California Digital Library and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI).

Due to popular demand the paper submission date for IDCC14 has been extended by 7 days and will now close at 12 midnight GMT on Monday 28th October 2013.

This refers to the submission of extended abstracts for practice based papers and full papers for research based papers, as well as the submission of workshop proposals.

Registration will open the week beginning 21st October 2013 and a draft programme will be available shortly.

The past year has seen growing momentum on many fronts of the movement towards “open”. The management of digital objects (e.g. articles, datasets, images, streams of data, multimedia objects) and non-digital objects (namely real-world entities, like authors, institutions, teams, geographic locations, etc.) is a crucial issue for the whole scientific and administrative process within an academic institution.

The need to unambiguously locate and access the digital resources, as well as associate them with the related metadata (e.g. authors, relevant entities, institutions, research groups, projects, administrative organisational units) is an essential requirement for managing, accessing, reusing, retrieving and preserving huge amounts of cultural and intellectual resources.

Along with the tide of Big Data, the relevance of this issue has been dramatically increased, making it clear that academic institutions have to take actions and develop plans that foster achievement of these goals. In this Conference, we argue that the introduction of comprehensive Data Management Plans is the imminent step for the Instiutions and their repositories which seek to fulfil requirements set to them.

Data Management Plans facilitate the curation process of digital objects. Thus, the time and effort spent by the curators is minimized.

The momentum for Open Access (OA) and research data sharing continues to grow and endorsement for OA from governments, funding agencies and institutions around the world signal that it will soon become a default mode for scholarly output. Critical to the success of OA are the infrastructures, both human and technical, that support policy implementation. To that end, many regions around the world are investing in the development of repository networks that facilitate open access and research data sharing.

OpenAIRE and the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) are pleased to announce that a joint conference and the COAR Annual Meeting will take place from May 21- 23, 2014 in Athens, Greece, at the Athens Acropolis Museum.

This conference will explore how OA infrastructures are being practically implemented around the world. Sessions will touch on how repositories intersect with other library and research services and the variety of value added services that enhance them such as text-mining. Other focus areas will be measuring the impact of scientific output and data in the institutional context. The conference will also discuss the issue of global interoperability of repository networks.

In addition to the main conference event there will be a number of related workshops, sessions, project internal meetings and the COAR General Assembly.The main topics and further program information will be announced on the COAR and OpenAIRE websites in the coming months.

The Ninth International Conference on Open Repositories, OR2014, will be held 9-13 June 2014 in Helsinki, Finland. The organizers are pleased to invite you to contribute to the program. This year’s conference theme is:

Towards Repository Ecosystems

Repository systems are but one part of the ecosystem in 21st century research, and it is increasingly clear that no single repository will serve as the sole resource for its community. How can repositories best be positioned to offer complementary services in a network that includes research data management systems, institutional and discipline repositories, publishers, and the open Web? When should service providers build to fill identified niches, and where should they connect with related services?  How might these networks offer services to support organizations that lack the resources to build their own, or researchers seeking to optimize their domain workflows?

Examining how repositories best integrate into the holistic research flow; exploring ties between domain-specific repositories and institutional repositories; and understanding durable content strategies outside of traditional repository environments are the central themes of the Open Repositories 2014 conference. We welcome proposals on these themes, but also on the theoretical, practical, organizational or administrative topics related to digital repositories. We’re particularly interested in hearing about:

  • Unconventional approaches to repository-like services
  • Interconnection between publishers and repositories
  • Researcher-centered design for scholarly workflows
  • Adaptations to support curation lifecycle management, e.g., for research data
  • Real-world scalability and performance stories: working at web-scale, with big data for global usage
  • Requirements for holding restricted or classified data in repositories
  • Infrastructure to accommodate national and international mandates for data management and open access

“Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) is a biennial international conference that focuses on the transformation of libraries and information services in the digital environment. In recognition of evolving online and social technological influences that present both challenges and opportunities, “ASSESSMENT” is the theme for LIDA 2014. The conference theme is divided into two parts. The first part addresses advances in qualitative assessment methods and practices and the second part covers assessment methods involving alternative metrics based on social media and a wider array of communicative activities, commonly referred to as “altmetrics.” While qualitative methods have a long tradition of application, altmetrics are a set of new approaches to filtering information and to evaluating scholarly communication and research, with possible application to libraries as well. The International Conference on Electronic Publishing (Elpub) enters its 18th year. Elpub 2014 will continue the tradition, bringing together researchers, lecturers, librarians, developers, entrepreneurs, users and all other stakeholders interested in issues regarding electronic publishing in widely differing contexts. With the overall symposium theme of ‘ETDs for Life’, we want to explore what difference the huge growth in open access to electronic theses and dissertations is making for authors, other researchers and for social and economic development

We are seeking proposals which address one of the following themes:

  •   ETDs for authors: topics such as authors’ perceptions of advantages/disadvantages of open access to ETDs and whether this access has influenced development of their career or other aspects of their lives.


  • ETDs for society and the economy: topics such as the value of open access to ETDs to business, education (including beyond academia), cultural life and economic development.


  • ETDs for scholarship: topics such as the visibility and accessibility of ETDs to the information seeker and the development of ‘enhanced’ ETDs which include access to related research data.

ERC Workshop on Research Data Management and Sharing @ Covent Garden, Brussels

On 18–19 September 2014, the European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA) in collaboration with the ERC Scientific Council’s Working Group on Open Access is organising a workshop on Research Data Management and Sharing.

During this 2-day event different aspects of this important topic will be explored together with ERC grantees and other researchers, with representatives from funding bodies, universities and other research performers, with publishers, scientific societies, policy makers and other interested parties.

The workshop is organised around a number of interactive sessions with lots of room for discussion. The ultimate aim is to generate a number of concrete recommendations to relevant stakeholders on how to encourage and support good data management practices and facilitate the sharing and re-use of research data.

The workshop is by invitation only. A detailed draft programme, which will be regularly updated, and information on how to request an invitation are available on the ERC website at

Na sequência do Memorando de Entendimento assinado entre os Ministros da Ciência e Tecnologia de Portugal e do Brasil em Outubro de 2009, e dando continuidade às conferências já organizadas, vai realizar-se nos dias 6 a 8 de outubro, na Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal, no Auditório da Reitoria da Universidade de Coimbra, a 5ª Conferência Luso-Brasileira de Acesso Aberto.

Esta Conferência tem como objetivo promover a partilha, discussão, produção e divulgação de conhecimentos, práticas e pesquisa sobre o acesso aberto em todas as suas dimensões e perspetivas, servindo de catalisador à disseminação de políticas, investigação e desenvolvimento na área.

A conferência pretende reunir as comunidades portuguesa e brasileira, que desenvolvem atividades de investigação, desenvolvimento, gestão de serviços e definição de políticas relacionadas com o acesso aberto ao conhecimento, através de repositórios e de revistas de acesso aberto, em instituições de investigação e de ensino superior.


Os temas a serem tratados no âmbito da Conferência são os seguintes:

– Repositórios de publicações científicas;

– Revistas científicas de acesso aberto;

– Repositórios de dados científicos;

– Políticas e mandatos de acesso aberto;

– Interoperabilidade entre os repositórios e outros sistemas de informação de apoio à atividade científica e académica;

– Sistemas de gestão da Ciência e Tecnologia (CRIS);

– Preservação digital;

– Direitos de autor;

– Acesso aberto, bibliometria e métricas alternativas.
